Why encrypt?

In our daily communications we use encryption more and more. Ten years ago we were encrypting emails, now we're encrypting chat channels, individual files and hard-drives.

It's a shame that we have to use encryption at all, but it's a sign of the times... Everyone has the potential to communicate to 100s of people linking themselves to thousands more... No time in known history has this been possible. With it comes more inscrutable surveillance... The closer we get to each other, the more we are able to reach out and discover that difference is what makes us unique, and yet we share the same planet, its soil, its food, our lives are encroached upon by those that would keep us in the dark.
